Language College
Welcome to the Language College page of Aylesbury High School's website.
We hope that you enjoy reading about events organised by the Language College and work done by students in our school, by our partners and in our local and international community.
Our aims as a Language College are:
- to become a centre of excellence for the learning of language
- to promote language learning in our family of schools and the community
- to develop international awareness in the young people in our community and prepare them for living and working in a global economy
- to help with the development of a cross-curricular approach to learning throughout the school
- to facilitate international links between all areas of the school and our current and future international partners
- to provide excellent facilities for teaching and learning
Here is a list of some of the activities organised by the Language College:
- Japan Day, Year 8 pupils are treated to an introduction to Japanese culture with hands on activities including language lessons, Origami, Kendo, Judo and Teiko Drumming.
- Comenius Exchange to France, Pupils from years 10 and 12 host students from one of our Comenius partner schools in France. (The others are in Italy, Poland and Germany) The theme for 2009-10 will be the environment. Pupils will undertake environmental projects in both countries, doing preparatory work in Science, Geography and Language lessons.
- International Day, Year 10 pupils organise a special day based on the theme of Africa for one of our partner partner schools which caters for SEN pupils, activities included African dance, Art, cooking, a juice bar, story telling and African drumming.
- A Modern Languages Conference was held on 15th December 2009 at the Green Park Centre in Aston Clinton. Co-hosted by AHS & AGS, the event was attended by 150 pupils from years 11/12 from different schools in the Aylesbury area. Students had taster sessions in more unusual languages, for example Russian, Danish and Chichewa, and then had talks by Universities and various employers with an international outlook on the benefits of learning a language.
- AHS now hosts an annual Gifted and Talented murder mystery event for local schools for Year 10 students, who have to use their considerable linguistic talents to solve a crime.
- The new January activity days in January see a Taste of Asia Day for Year 9 students involving cultural input from the Indian sub-continent, and then a variety of activities to do with our more mainstream languages, including a film competition, a session on cultural awareness in the workplace, a pilot of our planned Language Leaders scheme and a practical language session.
